The diseases of the heart- sh. abdul bary yahya

hasad-envy
ghitbah- envy w/o wishing the person loses the quality

central role heart has in islam. More to islam than 5 pillars. Allah(swt) judges the heart. Heart affects all other body parts, if it is pure the rest of body will be pure if impure rest will be impure. Sins affect/kill the heart. Repenting cleans the heart.

1. healthy heart- cleansed. All in heart is what pleases Allah(swt), he/she doesnt care about dunya. Every muslim entering paradise is either cleansed by Allah(swt) or via the hellfire.
2. dead heart- kufr...Allah(swt) has sealed their hearts. Blinds persons ability to see truth and twists their morality.
3. munafiq heart- knows truth but doesnt follow it.
4. hypocritical heart- very sinful muslim.

lecture was pretty much common sense

tafsir of ayatul qursi-anwar awlaki

Best/Most powerful ayah in quran-Ayat al qursi

Ubayy bin Ka'b (radiAllahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Abu Mundhir! Do you know which Ayah in Allah's Book is the greatest? I said: 'Allah and His messenger know best.' He (peace be upon him) again said: 'Do you know which Ayah in Allah's Book, according to you, is the greatest?' I (Abu Mundhir) replied: ‘It is 'Allah la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum'.[2:255]. Thereupon he (peace be upon him) patted me in the chest and said, ' Rejoice by your knowledge, O Abu Mundhir! (i.e, may this knowledge be a source of respect, honour and benefit to you)'." [Muslim]

Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa- powerful statement that there is no God but Allah(swt)
Al-Haiyul-Qaiyum- Allah's names the self subsisting/living. All life has to come from him.
La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm- Allah(swt) never sleeps or everything would fall apart. Musa(as) spends his whole day in dawah and he's holding these two bottles for nights. A night or two passes and he collapses. The two bottles shatter and the angels tell musa that Allah(swt) never sleeps or this would happen to the world.
lahu man fis-samawati wa ma fil-'ard- everything in the heavens and earth belong to Allah(swt). If everything belongs to Allah(swt), therefore, nothing can happen without his permission. If everything belongs to Allah(swt) you should not worry about anything and only fear Allah(swt). Realize if all creation were to come and benefit or harm you, they wont benefit or harm you except what is destined for you. You must believe that what happened to you could not have been prevented.
Man dhal-ladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnihi- Only things can happen with the permission of Allah(swt). Khalid bin Waleed(ra) tried hard to die as a martyr. He had scars on every inch of his body but he ended up dieing a natural death. This is what Allah(swt) willed.
Ya'lamu ma baina aidihim wa ma khalfahum- Time is linear. You cannot take a step back or two steps ahead. Allah(swt) is not binded by time, he knows the future, past, and present. Allah(swt) has shown some of his awliya visions of the future. Allah(swt) knows all and we know nothing but what Allah(swt) gives us. Musa(as) had to travel long distances for knowledge, we have it easily accessible to us.
wa la yuhituna bi shai'im-min 'ilmihi illa bima sha'a Wasi'a kursiyuhus-samawati wal ard-Kursi is translated as Allah(swt) footstool. Which includes the heavens and the earth. If you measure the distance in lightyears, this is ridiculously large. The lowest heaven is adorned with stars. In 21st century we still cannot get beyond the lowest heaven. The lowest heaven and the next highest heaven is like a ring in a shield and on and on. The seventh one compared to the throne of Allah is like a ring in a desert. We are nothing, you can't get away from Allah(swt). when you fear Allah(swt) run towards Allah(swt). Fear should drive you closer to Allah(swt).
wa la ya'uduhu hifdhuhuma
-even considering the size of the kursi, Allah has no problem managing it.

Wa Huwal 'Aliyul-Adheem
-Allah is greater than everything. He's the most high, most supreme. Nothing can compare to him.

Ayat al Kursi helps protect you from shaytan when you say it at night.

Lessons from Companions as How to Live as Religious Minority- Anwar Awalaki

I. Initial Stage of Dawah for Rasul(SAW)
1. He just made dawah to people around him not publicly. He lived for 13 years in Makkah as a minority.
II. Next Stage
1. Went to the Mountain As Safa which is just used for emergencies. Whoever wasn't able to attend sent a messenger.
2. The Prophet(SAW) asked if they would believe him if he said an entire army was behind the mountain. they said of course because he was known as Sadaq Al Amin.
3. He(SAW) said he came to bring a warning. They already knew what he was going to say because they saw Muhammad(SAW) and close people praying
4. Abu Lahab responded and said "May evil befall you for the rest of your days. Is this why you called us?"
5. First and only institution the Prophet(SAW) established in Makkah was center for 'ilm.
III. Lessons Learned
1. Make the path to Jannah/Jahannam very clear to the people.
2. It is better to hurt someones feelings than have them taste the fire. Even if you try to metaphorically drag them out of the fire.
3. You have to be bold.
4. Realize that your neighbors and people around you will be in the hellfire. You must be just and deliver the message.
5. You must have hikmah in conveying the message.
6. Have a smile on your face and deliver the message in a very kind manner.
7. Focus on building a solid foundation.
8. You can't just learn knowledge...you have to teach it as well after you obtain it.
9. Praying Qiyam al Layl is very important when conveying knowledge to others.
Ex. King burned followers of Isa bin Maryam(ra). They were "losers" in dunya but winners in akhirah and that's all that matters. Among believers are those who are true to the covenant of Allah(swt). Some have completed their vow and died and some will inshaAllah. You have a covenant to Allah(swt) until you die. If you keep with the covenant until you die you are victorious.

IV. Lessons from Abyssinian muslims

1. Muslims were all organized and they had their own amir/leadership(Jafa'r ibn Abi Talib(ra)).

Dream interpretation by Anwar Awalaki

Assalamualaikum,

I. Three Types of Dreams
A. True Dreams from Allah-Good dreams that you can talk about. Thank Allah(SWT).
1. Direct Dreams
2. Indirect Dreams in which there are symbols.
a. Dreams can be in the past or present
3. Mention dreams for dream interpretation only to a qualified scholar.
4. Don't mention dream to envious people.
Ex. Yusuf(as) not mentioning his dream to his brothers
5. Whoever sees Rasullulah(SAW) has seen his true form since shaytan can't distort it.
a. According to Ibn Taymiyyah/Ibn Sireen, you have to see him according to authentic narration of his characteristics.
b. According to Imam Nawawi he may come in a different form but he will still be
there so long as you feel it is him.
6. Repetition of a dream is a sign of its truth.
Ex. Companions had dream that Night of Qadr is in last seven days of Ramadan and the Rasul(Saw) said it must be true.
7. True dreams increase towards the end of time.
a. One opinion is this is when the time of night and day approaches the same time so during fall and spring.
b. Other opinion by Al Qurtubi says this is the actual end of time right when Isa bin Maryam(as) comes back.
8. When times are difficult for believers, dreams tend to come true so they can have hope.
9. Most times a true dream could take a long time to occur
10. Dreams that are a warning are swift.
11. Dreams are glad tidings and warnings but they aren't a source of legislation for sharia.
12. True dreams are short/concise.
13. A dream could be seen for someone else.
14. As soon as a dream is interpreted by a scholar, it will occur.
a. One opinion(Ibn Hajar) is that the dream is not according to the first interpretation given to it.
B. Dream in which Person is Talking to Self- repetition of day's thoughts.
C. Bad dreams from Shaytan
1. When you see this, turn towards left side 3 times and say audoobillahhimanayshaytaneerajeem(sp?). Also, it is sunnah to get up and pray then.
2. Don't mention the dream to anyone as to not give Shaytan a laugh that you are concerned.

*Righteous people tend to get many good/true dreams and most are direct since Shaytan has a weak hold of them. Dreams please the believer but don't be overconfident/boastful of its meaning.
*Bad people tend to get many bad/dreams from shaytan bc of inverse but may get true ones infrequently.

Ex. Prisoners and the king saw true dreams from story of Yusuf(as)
